Almost everyone has heard the term “gluten-free” in this day and age. But how does one know when they have a real sensitivity to gluten?
We’re lucky enough to live in an era where many restaurants and institutions are happy to accommodate anyone who requests it.

1. Regular headaches and/or migraines.
Headaches can happen anytime and for many reasons; dehydration, sleep deprivation or a blood sugar crash will all do the trick, but if you suffer from chronic, debilitating headaches or migraines, you might be gluten intolerant.

2. Dental and mouth issues.
Those who are sensitive to gluten tend to have pretty serious calcium deficiencies, which can affect the health of their teeth.
They may develop cavities, discoloration or sensitivity in the teeth more easily than others.
Gluten intolerance is also linked with a condition called “aphthous stomatitis”, which is a chronic recurrence of mouth ulcers.
3. Sudden unpredictable weight gain.
Many gluten intolerant people are dismayed by the seemingly random onset of weight gain that they experience at times, even with a normal diet and exercise.
This is due to systemic inflammation, which is what happens when they ingest gluten. It can also be malabsorption or gut permeability, which are symptoms of gluten intolerance.
4. Suppressed immune function.
There are antibodies in the mucosal lining called IgA antibodies.
They help your immune system function at it’s most efficient, fighting off colds, infections and everything else that might come along.
They are able to survive in the harsh atmosphere of the gut and work specifically with your intestinal tract to keep you from getting sick.
If your IgA antibodies are intolerant to gluten, they simply cannot function correctly and your immune system will suffer.
5. Impaired cognitive function or “brain fog”.
This can be a very subtle and sneaky symptom. It’s difficult to realize when we’re feeling foggy more often than not because well… We’re feeling foggy!
But if you have trouble concentrating, you can’t find the words you’re looking for, or your short term memory seems to be malfunctioning on a regular basis, it may be a sign of gluten intolerance.

6. Always tired and fatigued.
When you have an intolerance to gluten and are unaware, your body is full of a substance that it just can’t process. You are essentially running in “power save” mode.
You may think that you’re eating plenty of nutrient rich food which should give you the energy you need, but in reality your body is unable to absorb or use a good portion of what you’re feeding it.
This is bound to cause exhaustion because your nutritional needs are not being met.
