It’s hard to let go of the past sometimes.
We all look back on old times with fondness and sometimes regret. We miss old friends, old lovers, and old places too.
But being stuck in the past doesn’t do the present moment all that much good. In a way, pining for the past puts today on hold.
So what can we do to get out heads out of the past? Start by considering these 5 things.
1. How does the past serve the present moment?
It isn’t the past’s duty necessarily to serve this present moment in time, but it’s still a fair question to ask. What does the past do for you at this moment in time?
Does holding onto it enrich your present in any way?
2. Am I the same person?
When determining whether or not it’s healthy to hold onto the past, consider if you’re the same person as you were back then.
Do you hold the same spiritual beliefs? Ethical beliefs? Do you have the same interests? Would you do anything differently?
3. Is there anything left to gain from the past?
The answer to this question is almost always no.
Aside from valuable lessons, there really isn’t that much to take away from the things that happened in the past. But that leads to another question:
4. Have I learned my lesson?
Part of every messed up situation, part of every failure and every setback, is learning your lesson. If you’ve learned from the past, then it’s time to move on.
5. Am I happier in the present moment?
If the answer to this isn’t a resounding yes, you may want to consider making some changes.
